Vinyl-Siding Manufacturers Policy

on Pressure-Washing

Will it Void Warranty? --    Y = Yes,     N = No,      M = Maybe

Oil, dirt, grime and chalk can be removed with your garden hose and a bucket of soapy water.

CertainTeed shall not accept

any liability or responsibility under its written warranty for failure caused by application that does not meet our requirements.

 Prorated warranty if transferred.

This Warranty does not provide protection against any failure, defect or damage caused by situations and events beyond normal exposure conditions, including but not limited to:• Misuse, abuse, neglect, improper handling, or storage;   Use of accessories which do not properly receive and/or secure CertainTeed Vinyl Siding Products; • Failure of owner to provide normal maintenance and cleaning; • Normal weathering, fading, chalking or oxidation; • Discoloration orother damage caused by air pollution.

Periodic washing with a soft bristle brush and clean water from a garden hose may be necessary

to remove surface dirt. Chalk may also accumulate on the surface and can only be removed by by brushing.

For best appearance, clean vinyl siding at least once a year.  To remove soil, grime and chalk from your siding, use a garden hose, a soft bristle brush and a bucket of soapy water. To minimize streaking, wash the house from the bottom up. Thoroughly rinse the siding with clean water from a garden hose. Avoid prolonged or high pressure rinsing of open ventilated areas.

Warranty shall not apply to destruction or damage of the product or its failure to adhere to any surface

when resulting from or connected with misuse, neglect, or the impact of foreign objects or when caused by re, wind, earthquake or acts of God;

  NO Pressure Washing.

Wash the siding with an ordinary car washing brush that fastens to your hose

Lifetime Warranty is for original owner and for institutions up to 50 years.

Fading, discolor, oxidation, mildew, weathering, and similar is not covered by warranty.

NO PRESSURE WASHING. Norandex’s siding comes with a lifetime warranty for damage and defects beyond normal wear and tear and weather.  They take pains to point out that their warranty includes a clause covering owners for hail damage that may not be included in homeowners’ insurance. However their policy is limited,

Wash using a soft cloth or ordinary long-handled soft bristle brush. For textured surfaces, use only a soft bristle brush to avoid smearing the stain into the grooves of the texture. Clean gently to avoid surface abrasion. After cleaning, rinse area with water.  Do NOT use bleach.

If you decide to power wash your vinyl or aluminum siding, please be sure to read your power washer instructions carefully before you begin. When cleaning, hold the power washer straight at eye level. Don’t aim the washer upward as the water may collect behind the siding. This collected water could leak, which can produce streaks, or could stay behind the siding, which can cause decay. Set the pressure using a minimum of 1,500 PSI and maximum of 2,400, using a 40-degree tip.

This Warranty shall remain in effect only if normal cleaning practices are performed for maintenance of the Siding. (See Care and Cleaning.)This Warranty shall be null and void if harmful cleaning compounds are used.

CARE & CLEANING: Siding should be washed periodically by rinsing with a garden hose and clear water particularly in those areas not exposed directly to rain. If you desire to do a more thorough cleaning, or where high soil collection conditions occur, follow these simple instructions.

DO NOT PRESSURE or POWER WASH. Use a soft-bristled, long-handled washing brush. It attaches to your garden hose and makes washing your siding easier. Do not rub vigorously, as this may create glossy areas over the Product finish.

It is important that immediately following all washing operations, the entire surface be thoroughly rinsed with fresh water from a garden hose. Avoid prolonged or high pressure rinsing of open, ventilated areas.

QUESTION: I asked the

Vinyl Siding Institute

if it is acceptable to

Pressure-Wash Vinyl-Siding.

In am email, Jeffrey Smith of the Vinyl Siding Institute, explained that a soft-bristle brush and garden hose water pressure is all that should be used on vinyl siding.

Then he added this disclaimer, "We do, however, recognize that some homeowners or home maintenance companies prefer to use power washers. For them, we recommend holding the power washer straight at eye level (NOTE: how many do that ATW), not upward, which could drive water behind the siding, possibly dislodging it if the pressure is too high. In fact, some manufacturers don’t want pressure washers used on their products at all. Others allow them, but have limitations on the amount of pressure and the cleaners that can be used."

Examples include ancillary mold damage that results

from an otherwise covered peril, the liability of builders for mold damage that results from new

construction methods and materials, or the liability of property owners for potential health problems related to inhalation of mold spores.

Insurers have discovered that the repair of mold damage to property can be expensive. In

response, insurers have added language to property and liability policies to explicitly exclude or limit coverage for mold. p 13

18% of House Washes are improperly washed

Vinyl Siding Water Damage
Any one can pressure-wash (at least they think so). The result may be water damage, rot and mold that may not be discovered for years. ALL-THINGS-WOOD avoids the risk by covering the side of your home with FOAM, then scrubbing away the dirt and oxidation. Finally, we rinse from the top down (like rain) so no moisture is forced behind the vinyl.

How do I wash vinyl siding?

Wash vinyl siding with a soft cloth or ordinary long-handled soft bristle brush. For textured surfaces, use only a soft bristle brush to keep the grooves in the texture stain-free. For best results, start at the bottom of the house and work up and rinse the cleaning solution completely from the TOP down before it dries. If your house has brick facing, cover the brick so that it is not affected by the runoff.

Can I use a power washer?

Yes -- but with GREAT caution!   One should read the washer instructions carefully before use. When cleaning, hold the power washer straight at eye level to keep the water on top of the siding where it can clean most effectively. Do not aim the power washer upward as water may be driven behind the siding. (Most pressure-washers / house-washers shoot upwards)

You should also follow the siding manufacturer’s recommendations. Most manufacturers don’t want pressure washers used on their products at all. Others allow them, but have limitations on the amount of pressure and the cleaners that can be used.  All will caution against the use of pressure washers around any opening in the wall, such as windows, doors, electrical wiring, and plumbing.

Bob Vila reports:

"Another effective way to clean vinyl siding is by using a pressure washer, although some  manufacturers advise against it, and other manufacturers recommend a limited amount of pressure.

If using a pressure washer, be sure to keep the stream at eye level and pointed straight at the siding, not at an angle.  (but watch most pressure-washers, they shoot upwards)  That way, you won’t drive water in behind the siding. Use caution when using a pressure washer around openings like windows, doors, and plumbing connections.

Avoid using any cleaning products that contain organic solvents, chlorine bleach, liquid grease remover, nail polish remover, or furniture polish or cleaners. Any of these products might damage the vinyl siding’s surface. Also, avoid using highly-abrasive scrubbers or steel wool; these, too, can cause damage."

Our ReVinylize System will cost just over twice as much as pressure-washing.  But you won't have the dangers of pressure washing (see slides above) or possible health issues with MOLD.  Moreover, the protection lasts

for up to 10 years, we offer a warranty and the fungus /algae

is arrested by our proprietary

microbial sealer, PLUS you just rinse off the dirt with a garden-hose for years to

come -- no pressure washing

costs or risks.
